Earlier on Wednesday, it was revealed that running back J.D. McKissic had backed out of his deal with the Buffalo Bills, deciding the go back to play in Washington. It seemed like it may be a lost day for the AFC East champs until 6:30 PM rolled around and the team announced a massive deal.

The 33-year-old pass-rusher spent all of his career in Denver before being traded to the Los Angeles Rams this season on the way to a Super Bowl title. Miller recorded 9.5 sacks and 50 tackles between the two teams this year and while that marks the second year in a row that Miller has had fewer than double-digit sacks, he remains one of the games’ best edge rushers.

The Bills had been re-inforcing the middle of the defensive line so far this offseason, signing defensive tackles Da’Quan Jones, Tim Settle, and Jordan Phillips, so bringing in Miller gives Buffalo more juice off the edge. It all seems geared towards ensuring the defense can come up big in the playoffs, unlike last year when the Bills saw a late lead against the Chiefs vanish in 13 infamous seconds.

Also, it’s important to remember that, while the contract is listed as a six-year $120 million dollar deal, it’s really for much less than that:

So the deal really amounts to a three-year deal for $53 million that can reach $120 if Miller remains effective and on the Bills for the duration of his contract.

However, Buffalo wasn’t done there. Just minutes after announcing the Von Miller deal, Buffalo announced a one-year contract with tight end O.J. Howard for $3.5 million. Still just 27-years-old, Howard will come to Bills as a back-up tight end and versatile receiving option to work in behind Dawson Knox.
